Policeman’s Celebratory Gunfire Kills Nursing Mother in Ekiti
A nursing mother, Ifeoluwa Adekolu, tragically lost her life in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, after being struck by a stray bullet fired by a policeman celebrating a colleague’s promotion. The incident occurred near the Oke-Ila Police Station, where the officer, reportedly from another division, discharged his firearm in jubilation.
According to eyewitness accounts, Mrs. Adekolu was standing across the road opposite the station when the stray bullet struck her. She was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival.
The Ekiti State Commissioner of Police, Assistant Inspector-General (AIG) Adewale Adeniran, confirmed the incident, describing it as deeply regrettable. He stated that the officer involved has been disarmed and taken into custody.
“The officer is currently detained and will undergo thorough interrogation in line with the Nigeria Police Act. This is a tragic and unfortunate event, and the Ekiti State Police Command is committed to ensuring justice is served,” AIG Adeniran said.
