Photo: Obi’s Gesture Toward Atiku Draws Online Reactions
A photograph showing Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi shaking hands with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has stirred reactions on social media since Atiku shared it online.
In the image, Obi is seen slightly bent while greeting Atiku, prompting some Nigerians to interpret the posture as a sign of deference. Critics argue that such a gesture is inappropriate for a candidate aiming for the presidency, with some questioning whether it reflects political weakness.
The discussion has also touched on Obi’s role within the African Democratic Congress (ADC), where both politicians are members, with observers speculating about his ability to assert himself in political settings.
Public commentator Maduabuchi Idam has dismissed these readings, urging the public to focus on competence rather than appearances. In a statement to journalists, Idam said while casual observers might draw negative conclusions from the photograph, it is unwise to overinterpret a single moment.
Idam emphasized that Obi has consistently demonstrated calmness, discipline, and principled leadership. “Gentleness should not be mistaken for weakness,” he said, noting that Nigeria’s political challenges stem from repeatedly placing unsuitable leaders in positions of power, not from a lack of assertive personalities.
He encouraged Nigerians to value authenticity and judge leaders by competence, capacity, and integrity, rather than body language or optics.
