Obi left when it became obvious he wouldn’t get ADC ticket — Sen Umeh
Senator Victor Umeh of Anambra Central says Peter Obi exited the African Democratic Congress (ADC) after it became clear he was unlikely to secure the party’s presidential ticket.
Umeh made the remark during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time programme, where he discussed recent political alignments and developments within opposition coalitions.
According to him, early signals within the ADC indicated that Obi’s path to the party’s top ticket was not straightforward.
“The signs were there that Obi would not emerge as the ADC presidential candidate,” Umeh said. “I was also in the party. So you don’t need to tell somebody who is wise enough to know when the odds are piling against him.”
He argued that the coalition process that brought together different political actors was not backed by a clear leadership structure or sufficient planning at inception.
Umeh maintained that such alliances often undergo internal adjustments as they evolve, which eventually determines their stability and direction ahead of elections.
Reports had earlier indicated that Obi recently exited the ADC structure and aligned with the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), alongside former presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabi’u Kwankwaso.
