2027: Obi is contesting at the wrong time, cannot win presidency – Ebonyi Senator
A member of the Senate representing Ebonyi North Senatorial District, Onyekachi Nwebonyi, has stated that former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, is entering the race for Nigeria’s presidency at an unfavourable political period.
Nwebonyi made the remark on Wednesday during a live interview on *Politics Today* on Channels Television, where he discussed the 2027 general elections and the prospects of an Igbo presidency.
According to him, the current political structure does not support an Igbo candidate winning the presidency.
“Peter Obi is coming at the wrong time,” he said. “From the political calculations I have outlined, it is clear that President Bola Tinubu and other APC candidates are positioned to win in the South East during the 2027 elections.”
He added that political realities in the region had already been assessed by stakeholders.
“The Igbo people understand the situation. We have taken a position, and even if one of our own contests, the current political arrangement does not favour an Igbo presidency,” he said.
Nwebonyi further argued that timing and national alignment remain critical factors in determining electoral success, insisting that future opportunities would be more favourable for an Igbo presidential bid.
