Jonathan May Declare 2027 Presidential Bid on Friday — Report
Former President Goodluck Jonathan may formally enter the 2027 presidential race on Friday, according to sources familiar with ongoing political consultations.
One source quoted by Sahara Reporters said that Jonathan had already signalled interest in the contest and could make his position public as early as Friday.
“Former President Jonathan is likely to join the presidential race tomorrow, Friday. He has already hinted at joining the race and it may happen as early as tomorrow,” the source said.
Speculation around Jonathan’s political future intensified after he recently responded to calls from youth groups urging him to run for president again. Speaking at an event with young Nigerians, Jonathan said the decision required careful consideration and broad consultation.
“Presidential race is not a computer game. But I’ve heard you, and I’ll consult widely,” he said.
Political observers have linked Jonathan with the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), although there has been no official confirmation. The development comes after former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso reportedly joined the party following their exit from the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
During his remarks, Jonathan focused largely on national unity, electoral credibility and youth participation in politics. He urged young Nigerians to remain committed to the country’s progress and warned against political apathy.
“The key thing we need in this country is peace,” he said, adding that credible elections would encourage capable citizens to participate in governance.
Jonathan also criticised low voter turnout in Nigeria, describing it as one of the poorest he had observed across African countries where he monitored elections.
“Nigeria has the lowest turnout of elections in every election cycle. We have the highest voter apathy,” he said.
He called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to study the causes of voter apathy and develop measures to improve participation.
The former president further challenged young Nigerians backing his possible ambition to become more involved in the electoral process, including obtaining voter cards and participating in elections.
Jonathan also expressed concern over the growing “Japa” trend among Nigerian youths, saying leaders must create conditions that make citizens confident about their future in the country.
