Peter Afunanya Removed as DSS Spokesman

 

 

The Department of State Services (DSS) has announced the removal of Peter Afunanya from his role as Director of Public Relations and Strategic Communications. Afunanya, who revealed the development during a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday, did not disclose his next assignment but noted that the redeployment was a standard procedure within the DSS.

 

Afunanya has been a prominent figure in the DSS’s public relations department for over a decade, taking on his current role about six years ago during a time when the agency was dealing with significant credibility challenges. His tenure followed the compulsory retirement of former spokesperson Marilyn Ogar in 2015, who was ousted amid allegations of bribery and professional misconduct—allegations she has consistently denied.

 

In his remarks, Afunanya expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve as the DSS spokesperson and reaffirmed his commitment to the agency and the nation. He pledged to continue serving with “love, loyalty, honor, and glory” in any future role.

 

This change comes shortly after the appointment of Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi as the new Director-General of the DSS. Ajayi, who previously served as the Kogi State director, assumed office last Thursday and has committed to refocusing the service on covert operations and addressing the economic, political, and security challenges facing Nigeria.
