PDP Crisis: North Central Insists on Completing Chairmanship Tenure

Leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from Nigeria’s North Central zone convened in Abuja yesterday, reaffirming their demand to complete the tenure of former National Chairman Dr. Iyorchia Ayu, who hails from the region. The meeting emphasized the region’s insistence on retaining the chairmanship position until the tenure is completed.

Since Ayu’s removal, Ambassador Umar Damagum has been serving as the acting chairman. Efforts to convene a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting to appoint a substantive replacement have reportedly been stalled by the National Working Committee (NWC).

The North Central stakeholders appealed to leaders from other zones to support their claim to the chairmanship, emphasizing the importance of following party protocols.

The meeting was attended by prominent party figures, including Plateau State Governor Caleb Muftwang, former Senate Presidents David Mark and Bukola Saraki, Senate Minority Leader Senator Abba Moro, Senator Gabriel Suswam, Jonah Jang, Abdulfatai Ahmed, Babangida Aliyu, Idris Wada, Prof. Jerry Gana, Senator Dino Melaye, and several others.

In a communique issued after the meeting, the leaders reviewed the state of the party with a particular focus on the chairmanship vacancy. They urged the party to adhere to its constitution to restore cohesion and confidence within its ranks.

“The leadership of the party needs to rise to the occasion, making necessary sacrifices and compromises to restore goodwill and unity in the party,” the communique stated. It also stressed the importance of building consensus around the North Central zone’s position.

The stakeholders reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring that the North Central remains united in preserving the PDP as a platform for good governance in Nigeria.
