Oyo: Mob Attacks Firefighters for Stopping Fuel Siphoning from Overturned Tanker
Firefighters in Oyo State were forced to take shelter at a police station after being attacked by a mob while responding to a tanker fire at Sabo Market, Orile Igbon, along the Ogbomoso-Ilorin expressway. The incident occurred on Tuesday night, January 28, after a tanker carrying 33,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) suffered a tyre burst, leading to a fuel spill and subsequent fire outbreak.
According to a statement from the Oyo State Fire Service, the Ogbomoso branch was the first to arrive at the scene, followed shortly by personnel from the Kwara State Fire Service due to the location’s proximity to Kwara. The firefighters quickly began containment efforts, successfully siphoning over 10,000 litres of fuel into another tanker to prevent further hazards. No casualties or injuries were reported.
However, as they worked to secure the area, some residents attempted to siphon fuel from the overturned tanker. When firefighters intervened, they were met with violent resistance. The mob reportedly hurled stones at the Oyo State Fire Service personnel, severely damaging their fire truck, including shattering the windscreen.
Hassan Adekunle, Head of Media and Publicity for the Kwara State Fire Service, confirmed the attack, stating that the situation forced the firefighters to retreat to Owode Police Station for safety. He expressed concern over the assault on emergency responders and emphasized the need for public cooperation during such incidents to prevent further tragedies.
Authorities have yet to confirm if any arrests have been made in connection with the attack.
