Warri Diocese: Catholic Church Suspends Priest Over Secret Marriage in U.S.

The Catholic Diocese of Warri has suspended Rev. Fr. Daniel Okanatotor Oghenerukevwe from the priesthood following reports of his marriage in the United States.

In a statement titled “Decree of Suspension” and dated January 16, 2025, Bishop of Warri, Rt. Rev. Anthony Ovayero Ewherido, alongside Chancellor Very Rev. Fr. Clement Abobo, confirmed the suspension. According to the statement, Fr. Oghenerukevwe entered into marriage with Ms. Dora Chichah at the Streams of Joy Church in Dallas, USA, on December 29, 2024. Footage of the wedding has since circulated widely on social media.

The church stated that by this act, Fr. Oghenerukevwe had incurred a Latae Sententiae suspension, as outlined by Canon Law. The statement further revealed that the priest had previously contacted the diocese on November 30, 2024, seeking to be released from all canonical obligations associated with the priesthood. However, before completing the necessary procedures, he proceeded with the marriage, violating church regulations.

Bishop Ewherido officially decreed the suspension, prohibiting Fr. Oghenerukevwe from exercising any sacred ministry or presenting himself as a priest of the Catholic Diocese of Warri. The statement emphasized that all canonical implications of the suspension take immediate effect, while also noting that he retains the right to petition for revocation or amendment if he demonstrates a willingness to reform.

The diocese concluded by expressing hope that Fr. Oghenerukevwe would reflect on his actions and seek reconciliation with the church.
