Otti-Kalu Controversy: “The Blatant Hypocrisy Among Labour Party Supporters Is Infuriating” – Uzokwe Ndubuisi on Abia Governor’s Political Defections
Political analyst Uzokwe Ndubuisi has taken aim at Labour Party (LP) supporters for what he calls “selective amnesia” regarding recent events involving Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu. Kalu recently extended an invitation to Abia State Governor Alex Otti to rejoin the All Progressives Congress (APC), a move that has sparked controversy.
Ndubuisi’s critique highlights what he perceives as hypocrisy within the LP, particularly in light of Otti’s own political shifts. “Initially, I didn’t want to comment on this matter,” Ndubuisi said, “but the blatant hypocrisy among Labour Party supporters, who conveniently forget that their revered Otti did the same just months ago, is infuriating.”
He detailed Otti’s political journey, noting that after unsuccessful runs for Abia State Governor under the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in 2015 and 2019, Otti joined the APC in 2020. When Otti failed to secure the APC’s governorship ticket for the 2023 elections, he moved to the Labour Party and ultimately won the governorship.
Ndubuisi questioned the memory of LP supporters, remarking, “Sometimes I wonder how people can ‘forget’ something that never happened, except perhaps through selective amnesia.”
The analyst also compared the reactions to Otti’s previous campaign efforts with those to Kalu’s invitation. While Otti received praise for his role in bolstering the LP, Kalu’s gesture was met with harsh media criticism, which Ndubuisi suspects was influenced by Otti’s team.
“Nobody labelled him a monster. Nobody paid social media influencers to attack him,” Ndubuisi noted.
Looking ahead, Ndubuisi speculated on whether Otti would show similar dedication to the Labour Party if he were to campaign in Edo State, suggesting that the potential for similar controversies remains high. “Let’s see if he will not assure his followers that LP will take over the government house of Edo State,” he added.
