“Obi’s Associates Approached Me to Join Them in 2023, Then Tried Blackmail in 2026” — Sowore

Human rights activist and former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has accused members of Nigeria’s political class of attempting to pressure him into joining established political parties, which he described as compromised.

Speaking on a radio programme in Ibadan, Sowore alleged that associates of Peter Obi approached him after the 2023 general elections, urging him to align with the Labour Party. He claimed similar efforts resurfaced in 2026 and described them as coercive.

According to him, the outreach contradicted earlier criticisms by the same political actors, who had previously condemned Nigeria’s political system. Sowore said he rejected the предложение, insisting that joining such platforms would conflict with his principles.

He further alleged that some politicians have continued to switch affiliations, referencing movements involving the African Democratic Congress and the New Nigeria Peoples Party. He questioned the pattern of defections, describing it as evidence of weak ideological commitment.

Responding to criticism of his stance, Sowore said his refusal to align with mainstream parties is based on accountability and consistency. He argued that governance challenges persist due in part to public acceptance of underperformance by political leaders.

The activist also criticised state leadership, naming Alex Otti and Seyi Makinde. He described their performance as inadequate and argued that routine responsibilities such as salary payments and pension settlements should not be framed as achievements.

Recounting a recent visit to Aba, Sowore said he was unimpressed with the level of development. He noted that he had previously interacted with Otti before his election and expected higher standards based on past commentary on governance.

He also alleged that political figures deploy media and influencers to shape public perception following criticism, though he did not provide specific evidence. He maintained that elected officials must be held accountable to their promises.

Sowore reiterated that he would not join what he described as entrenched political structures, stating that meaningful reform requires a departure from existing systems rather than continued movement between parties.
