Why I Met Former President Jonathan — Obi
Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has explained his recent meeting with former President Goodluck Jonathan, saying the engagement focused on Nigeria’s current challenges and the need for national dialogue ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Obi made the clarification following a closed-door meeting held on Monday, which also included a delegation of South-East leaders, Igbo elders, senators from the African Democratic Congress in the region, and other political associates.
In a statement shared on X, Obi said the discussions were centred on national priorities and governance direction.
“Our discussions were frank, thoughtful, and anchored on the urgent need to reposition Nigeria on the path of unity, security, stability, productivity, and inclusive governance,” he said.
He noted that the meeting formed part of wider consultations with political stakeholders as attention gradually shifts toward the 2027 elections.
Obi said the prevailing situation in the country makes cooperation across political and regional lines necessary.
“At a time when our nation continues to grapple with economic hardship, rising insecurity, and deepening social divisions, it has become imperative that leaders across regions come together to reflect, consult, and act in the overall interest of the Nigerian people,” he stated.
On leadership, Obi said Nigeria requires a different approach focused on capacity and public service rather than personal ambition.
“Nigeria today requires leadership that is guided not by personal ambition, but by competence, character, capacity, and compassion. Governance is not about sharing what is left, but about creating what is needed,” he said.
He also called for a structural shift in the economy, stressing the need to move from consumption-driven policies to production-based growth anchored on the country’s resources and human capital.
Looking ahead to the next general elections, Obi described 2027 as a critical moment for the country’s political direction.
“The 2027 elections must not just be seen as another political exercise, but as a critical opportunity to reset the trajectory of our country,” he said.
He added that national priorities must remain focused on citizens’ welfare, including education, economic opportunity, and security.
