Nnamdi Kanu: “Obi Fighting ‘Political Menopause’ with Hypocritical Outrage,” Says APC
The All Progressives Congress has criticised Peter Obi for opposing the conviction of Indigenous People of Biafra leader Nnamdi Kanu, describing his comments as politically motivated and inconsistent. In a statement issued by Lagos spokesperson Seye Oladejo, the party accused the former Anambra governor of attempting to reinsert himself into national discourse by challenging a judicial process already before the courts.
Obi had argued that Kanu’s views were not unusual and maintained that he should never have been arrested or prosecuted on terrorism charges, adding that the conviction reflected a failure of leadership. The APC rejected this position, alleging that Obi was ignoring the violence linked to IPOB while presenting himself as a defender of justice. It claimed his criticism amounted to an effort to soften public perception of a group the government considers responsible for killings, intimidation, and disruptions in the South-East.
The party also accused Obi of shifting positions over time and displaying what it described as selective outrage. It urged him to study the judgment rather than approach the matter emotionally and claimed his intervention was driven by narrow political interests rather than national concern.
According to the statement, Obi’s reaction should be viewed as a response to declining political relevance. The APC questioned why, in its view, he showed greater assertiveness now than during periods when parts of the region experienced violent enforcement of sit-at-home directives. It reiterated that issues involving treason and national security must be governed strictly by law and affirmed that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu would continue to address such matters with what it called firmness and constitutional responsibility.
