NLC, TUC Call for Compliance from ASUU, Electricity Unions Ahead of Nationwide Strike
In a move to assert their demands, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have communicated with their affiliates, including the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and electricity unions, urging compliance with a planned nationwide strike scheduled to commence at midnight on November 14, 2023.
The joint letter, signed by Emmanuel Ugboaja, the National Secretary of NLC, and Nuhu Toro, the Secretary General of TUC, emphasized the decision made by the Joint National Executive Council. The directive calls for the withdrawal of services from all workers effective midnight, November 13, 2023. Additionally, the NLC and TUC have instructed their affiliates and state councils to disseminate circulars for maximum compliance, ensuring information reaches the national secretariats or relevant communication platforms.
Amid these developments, reassurance of unwavering commitment to Nigerian workers and citizens has been conveyed by the labor unions, promising ongoing updates as the situation progresses.
SK Blog has reported the initiation of the nationwide strike. The protest aims to address the recent physical assault on NLC President Joe Ajaero and other congress executives in Owerri, Imo State, on November 1, alongside unresolved Labour concerns in the state. The strike serves as a reaction to these incidents and issues, escalating the demand for resolution and justice.
