Tinubu, Governors Meet NLC Leadership in Abuja Ahead of 2027 Elections

President Bola Tinubu is set to meet with leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Abuja as political activity gathers momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The meeting, convened by the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF), will hold at 11:00 a.m. at the State House Banquet Hall, Presidential Villa. The President is billed to attend as Special Guest of Honour.

The engagement brings together the Federal Government, state governors and organised labour at a period marked by economic strain and policy adjustments. Invitations extended to the NLC leadership point to efforts to strengthen communication between government authorities and workers’ representatives.

According to sources within the labour movement, NLC officials plan to present a charter of demands directly to the President. The document outlines calls for wage adjustments, job protection measures and safeguards for workers affected by economic reforms and climate-related transitions.

The proposals include the establishment of a dedicated Just Transition Fund to support workers and communities impacted by structural changes. Labour leaders are also seeking large-scale investment in renewable energy and other sustainable industries to generate secure, unionised employment opportunities.

Other demands cover reskilling programmes for emerging sectors, expanded pension coverage, improved access to healthcare and stronger unemployment protections. The NLC is further advocating a structured tripartite framework that formally incorporates labour, government and employers into economic decision-making processes.

The meeting follows months of tension between organised labour and government over wages, inflation and reform measures. Labour representatives view the dialogue as an opportunity to secure firm commitments, while political analysts see the engagement as significant in shaping alliances ahead of 2027.

With membership spanning key sectors of the economy, the NLC remains an influential constituency capable of mobilising public support. The outcome of the discussions in Abuja is expected to determine whether sustained negotiation becomes the primary channel of engagement between labour and government in the months ahead.
