Nigerian Troops Eliminate 3 IPOB/ESN Operatives, Apprehend 2 Others in South East Operations

In a recent series of operations in the South East region of Nigeria, Nigerian troops have successfully neutralized three alleged operatives of the banned Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN). Additionally, two suspects were apprehended in these operations.

According to a statement released by Lt.-Col. Jonah Unuakhalu, acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations for the 82 Division, the operations were carried out as part of “Operation UDO KA II.” In one of these missions, troops conducted a clearance operation in the Orsumoghu Forest located in Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra. During this operation, two terrorists were eliminated. These individuals were believed to be associated with IPOB/ESN and had deployed Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) in an attempt to thwart the advancing troops. Despite the dangers, the troops managed to dislodge the group, neutralizing two of its members, while the rest fled with gunshot wounds. Various items were recovered from the terrorist hideout, including military gear, mobile phones, binoculars, and homemade IEDs.

In a separate operation, troops from Sector 2 of “Operation UDO KA II” arrested a suspected gunrunner in Effium, Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi while conducting a search-and-rescue mission. The suspect, identified as Francis Nwekire, was found in possession of 48 rounds of 7.62 mm special ammunition. Furthermore, the troops apprehended a suspected member of the Effium Militia, leading to the discovery of an AK-47 rifle, ammunition, and a magazine.

Additionally, troops from the Naval Base in Oguta, operating under “Operation UDO KA II,” launched “Operation IRON TETE” in Agwa community, Imo State, with the aim of eradicating IPOB/ESN elements from the area. During this operation, a known local gun fabricator with ties to the group, nicknamed “Packing Store,” was neutralized, and weapons with IPOB inscriptions were seized.

Lt.-Col. Jonah Unuakhalu emphasized the importance of citizens in the Southeast region providing timely and credible information to assist in the efforts to combat this menace. He reassured the public that “Operation UDO KA II” would continue its mission to combat crime and criminality while adhering to established rules and regulations.

The operations underscore the government’s determination to address security challenges posed by various groups in the region.
