Police neutralise two suspected IPOB/ESN sub-commanders in Imo

Two suspected sub-commanders of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), have been killed during a police operation in Imo State.

The operation targeted forest camps in Amaocha Afara, Umunoha and Ifakala communities across Mbaitoli and Njaba Local Government Areas.

Security analyst Zagazola Makama disclosed the development on Thursday via his official X account. According to him, the raid was carried out late on February 24 by tactical units of the Imo State Police Command following credible intelligence on the group’s activities in the area.

Police operatives reportedly came under fire upon arrival at the location, leading to an exchange of gunfire. Two suspects identified by their aliases, “Minute,” said to be from Ebonyi State, and “Nwaotu,” from Mkpoku in Mbaitoli LGA, were killed during the confrontation.

Items recovered from the scene include two automatic pump-action guns, nine live cartridges, six expended cartridges and a walkie-talkie. Other members of the group are believed to have fled the area with injuries.

Authorities confirmed that no police personnel were injured in the operation. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend those who escaped.

The raid is part of ongoing efforts by the Imo State Police Command to dismantle IPOB/ESN networks operating within the state.

Attempts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer in Imo State, Henry Okoye, for official comment were unsuccessful as of the time of this report.
