Police Order Dismissal, Prosecution of Officers Over Effurun Fatal Shooting
The Nigeria Police Force has approved the dismissal and prosecution of officers linked to the fatal shooting of Mr. Mene Ogidi in Effurun, Delta State, which occurred on 26 April 2026.
The decision follows internal disciplinary proceedings ordered by the Inspector-General of Police after the incident, which triggered public concern and internal review within the Force.
According to a statement from Force Headquarters, the officers involved were immediately withdrawn from the Delta State Command and transferred to Abuja, where they faced expedited disciplinary proceedings before the Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC).
The committee found that the principal officer involved, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nuhu Usman, breached Force Order 237 and other regulations governing the use of firearms. It described his actions as unlawful and unprofessional, resulting in a loss of life that could have been avoided.
Based on the findings, the FDC recommended the dismissal of ASP Usman and other officers found culpable. The Inspector-General of Police approved the recommendation and forwarded it to the Police Service Commission for ratification in line with established procedures.
The Force further stated that once administrative processes are concluded, the officers will be handed over to the appropriate judicial authorities for prosecution.
Reiterating the position of the Police Force, the Inspector-General emphasized a zero-tolerance policy for extrajudicial conduct and abuse of authority. He noted that no officer is permitted to act outside the law and that violations will attract both disciplinary and legal consequences.
He also expressed condolences to the family of the deceased, Mr. Mene Ogidi, assuring that the matter would be pursued to ensure accountability and justice.
The Police urged members of the public to remain calm, stating that due process is being followed and reaffirming its commitment to professionalism and respect for human rights.
