“Police cannot attribute problems to spirituality, but that may not be far from it” — Delta Police react to officer’s killing of handcuffed suspect
A police officer in Delta State, Usman Nuhu, is under investigation after a viral video showed a handcuffed suspect, Mene Ogidi, being shot dead while in custody.
The footage, which surfaced on Tuesday, has triggered public condemnation and renewed concerns over police conduct in the state.
Reacting to the incident, the spokesperson of the Delta State Police Command, Bright Edafe, said the situation was difficult to explain.
“There is no explanation for this,” Edafe said during an interview on Channels Television. “I don’t just get what was wrong with that policeman (Mr Nuhu).”
He added that while the police do not officially rely on spiritual interpretations, the incident appeared to defy normal reasoning.
“Police cannot attribute problems to spirituality, but that may not be far from it. Because that’s the only explanation one can give to what he did,” he said.
The command confirmed that internal investigations have begun to determine the circumstances that led to the killing of the restrained suspect.
Authorities say further action will depend on the outcome of the inquiry, as pressure continues to mount for accountability within the force.
