10 Women Among 25 Arrested in Akwa Ibom Cultism Raid
The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested 25 individuals suspected of involvement in cult activities during a late-night raid in Abak Local Government Area.
Police spokesperson Timfon John confirmed the development in a statement issued on Monday, May 4, 2026. She said the operation was carried out on May 3 at about 9:19 p.m., following intelligence reports about suspected cult gatherings in Oku Abak Village.
According to the statement, officers raided the area, described by authorities as a known hotspot for criminal activity, where the suspects were allegedly holding a meeting.
A total of 25 people—10 women and 15 men—were arrested during the operation. Those identified include Ubong Victor, Gabriel Utitofon, Liberty Sunday, Onyekachi Celestine, Sifon Ekong, Aniekeme Friday, Emmanuel Sunday, Emmanuel Johnson, Usiene Michael, Michael Effiong, Mbetobong Johnson, Christian Daniel, Baribor Zorka, Solomon John, Moses Eno, Ella Sunday, Esther Samuel, Gift Okon, Esther Effiong, Delight Eze, Agatha Godwin, Faith Simon, Favour Naru, Precious Effiong, and Hope Edet.
Police said a search of the location led to the recovery of a locally made pistol, two live cartridges, and a red beret believed to be linked to cult activity. Officers also impounded three motorcycles and a minibus suspected to have been used in criminal operations.
The Commissioner of Police, Baba Azare, said the arrests are part of ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal networks in the state.
All suspects are currently in custody and are cooperating with investigators, while efforts continue to locate other alleged members who fled the scene.
The police urged residents to provide timely and credible information to support security operations, assuring that all reports would be handled confidentially.
