Nigerian Defence Headquarters Announces Arrival of 100 US Military Personnel in Bauchi
The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) in Abuja has confirmed the arrival of about 100 United States military personnel and equipment at Bauchi Airfield, describing the move as part of ongoing defence cooperation between Nigeria and the US.
In a statement issued on Monday and signed by Major General Samaila Uba, Director of Defence Information, the DHQ said the deployment followed a formal request by the Federal Government of Nigeria for military training, technical support and intelligence collaboration.
According to the statement, the request was discussed during a working group engagement between Nigerian and US delegations. The US personnel are expected to support defined training requirements and enhance intelligence-sharing with members of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
The DHQ clarified that the American personnel are not combat troops. It stated that they are technical specialists serving strictly in advisory and training roles. All activities, the statement added, will be conducted under the authority and control of the Nigerian government and in coordination with the Nigerian Armed Forces.
Nigerian troops are expected to begin joint training engagements and intelligence-focused cooperation initiatives with the US advisers. The collaboration is aimed at improving operational coordination and strengthening the capacity of Nigerian forces to address extremist threats and protect vulnerable communities.
The Defence Headquarters said the partnership will provide access to specialized technical capabilities designed to improve Nigeria’s ability to respond to terrorist groups operating in parts of the country.
The Armed Forces of Nigeria reiterated its commitment to addressing insecurity and safeguarding national sovereignty, national security and citizens’ safety. The DHQ also assured the public of continued transparency and timely communication regarding the cooperation.
Earlier reports indicated that the United States plans to deploy up to 200 troops to Nigeria to expand training and technical support efforts. Both Nigerian and US officials have emphasized that the personnel will not engage in direct combat operations.
