Nigerian Correctional Service Takes Swift Action: 2 Dismissed, 35 Sanctioned
In a resolute move, the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has taken stern action by dismissing two personnel and sanctioning 35 others for a variety of misconduct. In an official statement released by the NCoS spokesperson, Abubakar Umar, on Wednesday, the decision is portrayed as part of the NCoS’s unwavering commitment to upholding discipline among its staff and adhering to international correctional best practices.
The misconduct that led to these personnel actions ranged from serious infractions such as trafficking in contraband, unauthorized absences from duty, theft, neglect of duty, criminal conspiracy, to aiding and abetting in unlawful activities. These offenses were deemed as direct threats to the security of correctional facilities, posing potential dangers to public safety and national security.
Controller General of Corrections, Haliru Nababa, emphasized the NCoS’s dedication to rewarding excellence and commendable performance while dealing decisively with erring personnel in accordance with existing legal provisions. Nababa further stated the NCoS’s firm commitment to maintaining a system free of disruptive elements, ensuring that what are referred to as ‘bad eggs’ are identified and removed. This resolute stance underlines the NCoS’s commitment to its mission and the safeguarding of security within correctional facilities and the broader community.
