Humanitarian Crisis Deepens as Bandits Rampage Through Niger State, Kidnapping Dozens
The humanitarian crisis in Niger State has taken a dire turn as a fresh wave of attacks by bandits has terrorized farming communities across Rafi, Mashegu, Wushishi, and parts of Shiroro Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Niger State.
According to reports from residents along the Zungeru-Tegina road in Rafi LGA, as well as Wushishi and Mashegu LGAs, bandits have been conducting relentless attacks and kidnappings since Thursday. The most recent atrocities occurred on Wednesday at approximately 5 pm when multiple communities between Yakila and Garun-Gabas on the Zungeru-Tegina road in Rafi LGA were raided, resulting in dozens of residents being abducted.
Our correspondent has learned that residents in Sayyadi, Kachi, and neighboring villages in Rafi, Mashegu, and Wushishi LGAs have been living in fear, with numerous kidnappings occurring between the penultimate Friday and Wednesday. The attacks have forced many residents to abandon their homes as shops and houses were looted.
The bandits have also targeted Maidawa and Tabbani in Mashegu LGA, where they rustled cattle and held citizens as hostages. These hostages were later transported to Tabbani village using canoes, marking the perilous extent of the violence.
Efforts to reach the spokesperson for the Niger State Police Command, DSP Wasiu Abiodun, were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
However, when contacted, the Chief Press Secretary to the Niger State Governor, Bologi Ibrahim, assured that the state government remains committed to securing the lives and property of its citizens, particularly those in communities threatened by bandit attacks. The situation in Niger State underscores the urgent need for action to address the ongoing crisis and ensure the safety of the affected residents.
