Bobrisky Kept in Shared Cell with Other Inmates, No VIP Treatment – Nigerian Correctional Service

Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, is currently serving a six-month prison sentence at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre for abuse of naira notes. Contrary to reports suggesting he is housed in a VIP apartment, the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has clarified that Bobrisky is kept in a shared cell with other inmates.

In a statement released on Saturday, the NCoS spokesperson, Rotimi Oladokun, dismissed claims that Bobrisky had special accommodations within the correctional facility. The statement emphasized that the convict is treated like any other inmate and is subject to the same rules and regulations.

“The convicted inmate, Okuneye Idris Olanrewaju, aka Bobrisky, is currently serving a 6-month jail term for abuse and mutilation of the Naira note within the custody of the Custodial Centre in the State,” Oladokun said.

According to the correctional service, the infrastructure at Kirikiri consists of shared cell blocks, with no en-suite or single-bedroom style cells. All inmates are provided with reformative and rehabilitative opportunities through educational and vocational training programs. Bobrisky has been assigned to a shared cell with other convicted inmates and wears male-designated correctional clothing.

Oladokun reiterated that Bobrisky is remanded in a male custodial centre, where he adheres to the standard dress code and has no special privileges. The NCoS spokesperson urged the public to disregard the misleading reports, adding that legal redress might be pursued over the erroneous information.

The correctional service source, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that Bobrisky underwent a routine examination upon admission, revealing no gender realignment or alteration of genital organs. Additionally, the source reiterated that Bobrisky received the same treatment as other inmates, with no exceptional benefits.

Bobrisky’s arrest and conviction stemmed from a video showing him spraying new naira notes at a movie premiere in Lagos. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arrested him on April 3, 2024, and he was convicted on April 5 after pleading guilty to charges related to naira abuse.
