Nigerian Army Reacts to Allegations of Church Invasion in Anambra
The Nigerian Army has officially denied reports that its personnel invaded churches and disrupted worship services in Umunze, Orumba North Local Government Area, Anambra State. The rumors, which caused widespread concern, suggested that soldiers had stormed several Catholic churches in the area, creating panic among the local population.
However, in a statement released on Thursday, Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, the Director of Army Public Relations, clarified that the military’s actions were part of a planned cordon and search operation, not an invasion as some reports claimed.
According to Maj.-Gen. Nwachukwu, troops from the 82 Division of the Nigerian Army conducted the operation based on intelligence that suspects involved in an earlier attack on soldiers were receiving medical treatment in a house near the church. The operation aimed to apprehend those responsible for the assault, which resulted in the deaths of two soldiers.
“During the operation, troops evacuated individuals deemed vulnerable to prevent collateral damage in case of a shootout,” Nwachukwu explained. “The cordon and search were carried out to arrest accomplices who had escaped with gunshot wounds and were believed to be hiding in the area.”
Nwachukwu noted that while the operation took place on a Sunday, the timing was purely coincidental and not intended to disrupt religious activities. He emphasized that the deployment of troops in the area was crucial due to the rising incidents of kidnapping and ransom demands in Umunze, adding that their presence has significantly reduced such crimes.
“The troops are committed to ensuring the safety and security of all citizens,” he assured, reiterating that the military’s actions were in the best interest of the community.
