Nigerian Army Dismisses Soldiers Caught Stealing Cables at Dangote Refinery

In a swift response to allegations of theft and vandalism at the Dangote Refinery in Lagos, the Nigerian Army has confirmed the dismissal of two soldiers involved in the incident. SK Blog had earlier reported that two army personnel, Corporal Innocent Joseph and Lance Corporal Jacob Gani, were arrested for stealing armoured cables from the refinery.

The Dangote Refinery, owned by the Dangote Group, was inaugurated on May 22, 2023, in the Ibeju-Lekki area of Lagos State. The arrest of the two soldiers followed a joint investigation by the Nigerian Army and the refinery’s management.

A press statement issued by Onyema Nwachukwu on Monday detailed the army’s response to the incident. It explained that the suspects were summarily tried according to the Armed Forces Act, allowing them to present their cases. After thorough deliberation, they were found guilty of the alleged offences and were subsequently dismissed from the Nigerian Army.

“The Nigerian Army (NA) wishes to inform the general public of the outcome of the investigation into the alleged theft of armoured cables at the Dangote Refinery premises on 14 Apr 24; involving one Corporal Innocent Joseph and Lance Corporal Jacob Gani,” stated Onyema Nwachukwu.

“The investigation conducted in collaboration with the management of the company implicated the two soldiers for unauthorized possession of these materials. In accordance with military laws, the soldiers were summarily tried, given the privilege to present their cases, and subsequently found guilty of the charges levied against them.”

The army emphasized its commitment to maintaining high standards of professionalism and discipline, reiterating its zero-tolerance approach to any form of misconduct or criminal activities within its ranks. Following the summary trial, the soldiers were handed over to relevant authorities for further prosecution.

“The NA once again condemns this act which could tarnish the image and reputation of this revered institution and also undermine the trust and confidence the public imposed in their Army,” the statement added.

In addition to dismissing the soldiers, the Nigerian Army reassured the public and stakeholders of its unwavering dedication to upholding integrity, discipline, and accountability across all levels. The army urged the public to support its efforts in maintaining law and order, safeguarding national security, and promoting peace and stability.
