Nicki Minaj Reveals Her Igbo Name and Its Meaning
Internationally acclaimed rapper Nicki Minaj, born Onika Tanya Maraj-Petty, has confirmed that her first name has Igbo origins.
Minaj explained that “Onika” is the Trinidadian version of the Igbo name Onyekachi, which translates to “Who is greater than God.” The revelation came in response to a fan’s post praising her recent appearance at the United Nations, where she spoke out against jihadist violence targeting Christians in Nigeria.
The fan highlighted the significance of her name, suggesting it reflected her destiny to confront injustice. Sharing a post on X, the fan wrote: “The name Onika means ‘continued belief in a supreme being who holds ultimate authority and surpasses all others in greatness.’ Let my Nigerian Barbz and friends confirm how God destines someone for great things before they are even born!”
Minaj responded to the post by adding another layer of intrigue, noting that a tattoo on her arm translates to “God is with me” in Chinese.
