Money doesn’t buy happiness, says Elon Musk, sparking online debate

Elon Musk, the world’s richest man, stirred discussion on social media on Wednesday after sharing a brief reflection on wealth and well-being.

“Whoever said ‘money can’t buy happiness’ really knew what they were talking about,” the Tesla and SpaceX chief executive wrote.

The post quickly gained traction, drawing more than 33 million views and over 245,000 likes within hours. Many readers saw it as an unusually personal comment from a figure more often associated with business, technology, and market headlines.

The remark prompted a wave of reactions across platforms, including in Nigeria, where some users linked Musk’s statement to Adekunle Gold’s 2021 song *It Is What It Is*. In the track, the singer reflects on discovering that financial success did not automatically lead to contentment — a theme similar to Musk’s post.

Online responses showed sharp differences in opinion. Some users agreed with Musk’s view, arguing that money may ease hardship but does not resolve deeper emotional issues. Others pushed back, pointing to the psychological strain that often accompanies poverty. One widely shared reply argued that lacking money can bring its own forms of distress, including anxiety and envy.

A number of commenters also questioned whether someone with vast wealth could fully relate to the financial pressures faced by ordinary people. One user joked that a modest sum would be enough to guarantee years of happiness. Religious perspectives also appeared in the discussion, with some users suggesting that lasting fulfillment comes from faith rather than finances.
