“Moghalu Will Deliver Good Governance to Anambra” — Peter Obi Backs LP Candidate as Campaign Kicks Off
The Labour Party launched its 2025 Anambra governorship campaign on Friday with a strong show of support from Peter Obi, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, who officially unveiled Dr. George Moghalu as LP’s flagbearer for the November 8 election.
Speaking to a crowd of supporters in Onitsha, Obi described Moghalu as a capable and compassionate leader, urging Anambra residents to back him for the future of the state. “Dr. Moghalu is prepared to govern with empathy and compassion. He will deliver good governance to Anambra. I urge you to support him,” Obi said.
The former Anambra governor emphasized that leadership must focus on the needs of the poor and everyday traders, and praised Moghalu for sharing that vision. “Governance for me is about caring for the poor and petty traders — the same people the government taxes,” he said.
Obi also reaffirmed his intention to run for the presidency again in 2027. “Let me remind you that I am contesting for President in 2027, and I am serious about it,” he declared. “Everyone has the right to contest, but none of them has better credentials than I do.”
He dismissed speculations about his defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), clarifying that the Labour Party remains his political home. “I remain a Labour Party member, as are all our members at both state and national levels. We are here today for this symbolic flag-off of the campaign for our LP flagbearer, Dr. George Moghalu,” he said.
Obi also expressed confidence in the party’s choice of deputy governorship candidate, Mrs. Ifeoma Okaro, noting her popularity and commitment to family-oriented governance. “She is not only popular but organized. We believe her presence will further enhance our commitment to caring for families,” he said.
In his address, Dr. Moghalu promised to lead with the fear of God and to uphold the trust of the people. “If we begin to list everything we plan to do, we’ll sleep here,” he said. “But I can assure you that my deputy and I will serve Anambra with dedication and integrity. Children will return to school, roads will be built, agriculture will thrive, and we will not disappoint.”
He also pledged humane tax reforms and full implementation of the party’s manifesto. “People will pay taxes, but not with pestles. We will not oppress our people. Every promise we’ve made will be fulfilled.”
Senators Victor Umeh (Anambra Central) and Tony Nwonye (Anambra North) joined Obi in endorsing Moghalu and promised to rally support across the state for Labour Party’s victory.
With the campaign now in motion, the party is banking on Obi’s political weight and Moghalu’s grassroots appeal to clinch the governorship seat in 2025.
