Mercy Chinwo Sues VeryDarkMan for N1.1 Billion Over Defamation Claims
Gospel singer Mercy Chinwo has taken legal action against social media critic VeryDarkMan (VDM), suing him for N1.1 billion over alleged defamation related to her dispute with her former record label, EeZee Concept.
The lawsuit, dated March 3 and filed by her lawyer Pelumi Olajengbesi, accuses VDM of making “libelous, malicious, spiteful, and grossly defamatory” statements about Chinwo in a series of Instagram posts last month. In those posts, VDM alleged that Chinwo misappropriated funds from her performances without remitting them to EeZee Concept, owned by Ezekiel Onyedikachukwu. He also claimed that she breached her contract with the label before leaving.
Olajengbesi argued that VDM, who was not directly involved in the dispute, falsely presented the singer in a damaging manner. The lawsuit states that VDM’s remarks were misleading and injurious to Chinwo’s public image.
Chinwo is seeking N1 billion in general damages, N100 million in punitive and aggravated damages, and an additional N25 million to cover legal costs. She is also asking the court to compel VDM to delete the alleged defamatory posts, issue a public apology, and publish retractions in four national newspapers for 14 consecutive days.
The legal battle follows Chinwo’s fallout with EeZee Concept after she left the label. The singer accused Onyedikachukwu of financial exploitation, alleging that he diverted approximately $345,000 from her digital platforms and events without proper disclosure. Onyedikachukwu, popularly known as EeZee Tee, denied the allegations but later called for an audit to address claims of financial misconduct.
On February 17, a federal high court in Lagos upheld an arrest warrant against Onyedikachukwu and adjourned the case to March 6.
