VDM’s Call to Abolish Bride Price Sparks Debate Online

Nigerian media personality Martins Vincent Otse, known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), has stirred widespread discussion after calling for the abolition of bride price in Nigeria, arguing that the practice contributes to the objectification of women in marriage.

In a recent statement shared online, VDM questioned the cultural relevance of bride price, saying some men view it as proof of ownership over their wives. He argued that this perception encourages unequal treatment of women and undermines the idea of marriage as a partnership.

He also criticised parents who, according to him, treat bride price as a commercial transaction, suggesting that the practice is sometimes driven by financial motives rather than tradition. VDM further noted what he described as a contradiction, claiming that families with fewer resources often demand higher bride prices, while wealthier families tend to request less.

Citing his personal experience, VDM said bride price in his community is as low as ₦5,000, questioning how such an amount could be used to justify authority or control over a woman. He stressed that bride price does not reflect a woman’s character, education, values, or personal achievements.

VDM maintained that marriage should not be transactional and emphasised that paying bride price does not confer ownership of a woman.

His comments have drawn mixed reactions online. Supporters applauded him for challenging a long-standing cultural practice they consider harmful, while critics defended bride price as a symbolic tradition meant to honour families and preserve cultural identity.

The debate continues across social media, with many Nigerians revisiting the cultural, social, and ethical implications of bride price in modern society.
