LP Crisis: Obi Responds to Abure’s Accusations of Betrayal

The Labour Party Presidential Candidate from last year’s election, Peter Obi, has reacted to allegations of betrayal made by the party embattled National Chairman, Barrister Julius Abure.

At a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting on Monday, Abure accused Obi and the party’s sole governor, Alex Otti of Abia State, of plotting against him. He claimed the two organised a stakeholders meeting in Umuahia, Abia State, where a 29-member caretaker committee led by former Minister of Finance, Esther Nenadi Usman, was appointed to address the party’s leadership crisis.

In response, Obi, speaking through Ibrahim Umar, spokesperson of the Peter Obi Media Reach (POMR), dismissed Abure’s claims. He expressed disappointment, stating that the accusations were not unexpected but politically motivated.

“The stakeholders meeting in Umuahia was aimed at resolving the ongoing leadership issues within the party and was not a personal attack,” Umar explained. He emphasized that the decisions taken were in the interest of unity, justice, and transparency, with the full backing of the Obidient Movement.

Obi’s camp accused Abure of misleading the public and defaming Peter Obi’s character. “Simply because he intervened for justice? Abure’s tenure ends in June, yet he refuses to step down and has even vowed to fight on. Who exactly is he fighting?” Umar questioned.

He further urged Abure to prioritize the party’s interests over personal ambitions and to accept the efforts made by Obi and Governor Otti to resolve the internal conflict.
