Lakurawa Terrorists Raid Nigerian Customs Camp, Kill Officer, Set Facility Ablaze
Armed assailants believed to be members of the Lakurawa group carried out a violent attack on a Nigeria Customs Service camp in Maje, Bagudo Local Government Area of Kebbi State late last night. Eyewitnesses reported that the attackers arrived in large numbers, opened fire indiscriminately, and killed one Customs officer before setting the facility on fire. Residents described the scene as chaotic, with many fleeing for safety as the camp was engulfed in flames.
Authorities from the Kebbi State Government and the Nigeria Customs Service have yet to release official statements regarding the incident.
The attack comes amid ongoing debates over the motivations behind banditry in northern Nigeria. Kaduna-based Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has previously defended some of these groups, suggesting their actions are driven by revenge rather than unprovoked violence. In a recent interview monitored by SaharaReporters, Gumi emphasized that Fulani herdsmen and bandit groups have historically lived peacefully with local communities and often act in response to grievances. While condemning the killings as “wrong and obnoxious,” he urged the federal government to pursue negotiation and rehabilitation instead of solely relying on military measures.
