New Terror Group Mamudawa Emerges in Kebbi, Kills Four in Coordinated Attack
Armed attackers identified as members of a newly formed group known as Mamudawa have killed at least four people in a series of coordinated assaults across rural communities in northwestern Nigeria.
The attacks took place on Sunday and Monday in Gebbe District within Shanga Local Government Area, targeting Kalkami, Tungar Bori, and Kawara communities. Several houses were also set on fire during the raids.
Local sources said the attackers moved in from Wawa Forest, located in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State, before crossing into affected settlements in Kebbi State.
Residents reported that the assailants stormed Kawara village on Monday, setting structures ablaze and forcing large numbers of people to flee. Some villagers escaped to nearby Gungu, while others reportedly took refuge in surrounding forests for safety.
A local source described the situation as part of a worsening security pattern in the area, where communities have continued to face repeated raids involving armed groups, livestock theft, and kidnappings.
Although exact figures remain unclear, community members estimated that about four people were killed during the latest attacks.
Officials in Shanga Local Government Area confirmed the incident. The Vice Chairman of the council, Adamu Hamza Gebbe, said the attacks were among several recent incidents affecting rural settlements in the area.
The District Head of Gebbe, Alhaji Haruna Usman, also confirmed the displacement of residents, noting that many households had been forced to abandon their homes amid the violence.
In a statement, the police command in Kebbi State confirmed that Gebbe, Kawara, Kalkami, and nearby villages were attacked. Police spokesperson SP Bashir Usman said the attackers took advantage of difficult wetland terrain, adding that property was destroyed and lives were lost during the operations.
