Kwankwaso Speaks About Meeting with Makinde
Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso on Wednesday spoke about his closed-door meeting with Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde at the Governor’s Office in Ibadan.
The meeting, which lasted about two hours, was described as a courtesy visit. It has drawn attention amid political activity ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Kwankwaso, leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), was accompanied by the party’s National Chairman, Dr Ajuji Ahmed; National Publicity Secretary, Ladipo Johnson; Secretary of the Board of Trustees, Buba Galadima; and other senior officials.
The NNPP delegation was in Oyo State for the inauguration of its state office and internal consultations. The visit to Makinde, a second-term governor elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), prompted speculation because both men belong to different political parties.
Addressing journalists after the meeting, Kwankwaso said the visit was based on personal ties rather than political negotiations.
He stated that he and the governor had maintained a longstanding relationship and that he considered it appropriate to pay a courtesy call before proceeding with party activities in the state.
Kwankwaso also outlined his political background. He said he was among the founding members of the PDP in 1998 and was elected governor of Kano State in 1999 under the party. He later served as Minister of Defence, returned as governor in 2011, moved to the All Progressives Congress, and eventually became the national leader of the NNPP.
Details of the discussion were not made public.
