Kwankwaso Signals NNPP Open to Merger, Promises Revisit of Kano Emirates Issue

In a recent interview with select radio stations on Friday, Senator Rabi’u Kwankwaso, the presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in the 2023 general election, revealed the party’s willingness to explore a merger, emphasizing the necessity of a collaborative approach for political success in the country.

Kwankwaso, also the leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement, addressed the contentious issue of the Kano emirates, expressing his intent to revisit the matter. He criticized the previous split of the Kano emirate into five by the former governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abdullahi Ganduje, who had also dethroned and banished the then Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi.

In the interview, Kwankwaso asserted, “It was brought with some bad intentions, which every one of you here and our listeners is aware of. Sometimes you come with things that are good and they turn out to be bad.”

Despite not being consulted on the matter yet, Kwankwaso affirmed that discussions would take place to determine the appropriate course of action regarding the Kano emirates.

On a broader political front, following the Supreme Court verdict that reversed the sack of Governor Abba Yusuf, Kwankwaso expressed openness to a possible merger of the NNPP. He acknowledged the need for a united front, stating, “No party can singlehandedly win elections or clinch power in the country.” Kwankwaso extended an invitation to any interested parties to engage in talks with the NNPP, aiming to form a formidable force capable of delivering the dividends of democracy to Nigerians.
