Kano Emirship Tussle: Details of Ribadu and Kano Governor’s Abuja Meeting Revealed
Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has formally apologized to the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, amidst accusations of interference in the ongoing Kano emirship crisis. This apology was extended during a private meeting held in Ribadu’s Abuja office on Thursday, sources revealed to Daily Trust.
Governor Yusuf’s recent actions, including the dethronement of Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero and the reinstatement of Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II as Emir of Kano, have stirred significant controversy. The enactment of the Kano State Emirates Council Law 2024 facilitated these changes, leading to heightened tensions and the deployment of troops to the Nassarawa palace, suggesting federal backing.
Tensions escalated when Kano’s Deputy Governor, Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo, accused Ribadu of supporting Ado Bayero’s return to Kano post-dethronement. Ribadu denied the claims and threatened legal action, demanding an apology from Gwarzo, which was subsequently given, citing flawed intelligence.
During the private meeting, Governor Yusuf personally apologized to Ribadu in Hausa, addressing the recent contentious statements made by his deputy. Yusuf emphasized that a public apology was insufficient, prompting his personal visit to Abuja. Sources privy to the discussion revealed that the governor and the NSA had a candid conversation, with Yusuf verbally appealing to Ribadu over the accusations made the previous week.
Governor Yusuf’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, confirmed the retraction of allegations and the governor’s apology, highlighting the respect for Ribadu’s professional integrity and anti-corruption efforts. The meeting, lasting over an hour, also covered the broader state of affairs in Kano following the abrogation of five new emirates and Sanusi’s reinstatement.
Coinciding with the meeting, Sanusi marked his sixth day at the Kano palace, receiving strong support from district heads and the Tijjaniyya Shura Council. Despite the heavy security presence at the emir’s palace and the guest house of Bayero, Kano residents have continued their daily routines undisturbed.
