Calm Returns to Kano as District Heads Pledge Loyalty to Emir Sanusi Amid Legal Dispute
A sense of calm is gradually returning to Kano after several days of tension surrounding the throne of the Emir of Kano. This comes as Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II marks the sixth day of his reinstatement, despite ongoing legal challenges to his position.
Governor Abba Yusuf’s decision to reappoint Sanusi has been met with controversy. While Sanusi’s supporters assert his rightful claim to the emirate, a Federal High Court in Kano has issued an order halting his reinstatement pending the resolution of a lawsuit challenging his reappointment.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports increasing support for Sanusi, with more district heads and members of the Tijjaniyya Shura Council pledging their loyalty. Prominent figures such as Khalifa Sayyadi Bashir, Khalifa Abdullahi Uwaisu, Sheikh Ibrahim Shehu Maihula, and Barrister Habibu Dan Almajiri have also endorsed Sanusi, whose claim to the throne is being contested by Emir Aminu Ado Bayero’s faction.
During an initial court session on Sunday, Emir Sanusi received pledges of allegiance from 40 district heads and several notable individuals within the council. Despite the court’s order, the city remains largely undisturbed, with residents continuing their daily routines.
Security presence is noticeable around the Emir’s palace and the guest house where Bayero is currently staying. However, Kano residents appear unperturbed by the heightened security.
Alhaji Kabiru Abubakar of Dakata Quarters stated that most residents are more concerned with their livelihoods than the emirship dispute. He expressed confidence in the ability of political and religious leaders to resolve the issue swiftly.
Hajiya Aishatu Danlami of Brigade Quarters praised the state government’s decision to ban protests, preventing potential unrest. She commended the residents for resisting provocations aimed at causing confusion.
“Allah has spoken, and Sunusi is now in the palace, piloting the affairs of the Emirate. May Allah continue to guide him to bring about the progress we desire,” Danlami told NAN.
Alhaji Abdullahi Yakubu described Sanusi’s return as reflective of the people’s will, while Alhaji Musa Isa of Dala Local Government Area called on Bayero to accept the situation as divine will and move on.
NAN reports that the Kofar Kudu palace is bustling with activity, attracting visitors eager to witness the royal displays and performances. Traditional gun salutes and horse-riding displays by palace aides have become daily occurrences. Vendors and entertainers have also flocked to the palace, creating a lively atmosphere.
As the legal battle continues, the city of Kano remains calm, with many hopeful for a peaceful resolution.
