Fresh Tension Mounts in Kano as Emirs Sanusi and Bayero Announce Plans to Lead Jumaat Prayers at the Same Mosque
A fresh wave of tension has swept over the ancient city of Kano as two rival emirs, the reinstated Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II and the dethroned Emir Aminu Ado Bayero, have both declared their intentions to lead Jumaat prayers at the Palace Central Mosque.
Reports indicate that Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II, who resides in the palace and is closer to the central mosque, is expected to lead the two-rakat Friday prayers. Traditionally, Sanusi has been leading these prayers as the Amir of the city.
A statement released Thursday night by Danburan Kano, Munir Sanusi Bayero, confirmed that Emir Sanusi II would be moving to the mosque to lead the prayers and invited Kano residents to attend and listen to his sermon.
In a parallel development, an aide to the deposed Emir Aminu Ado Bayero issued a statement inviting residents to join Bayero at the Emir’s Palace Friday Mosque for the Jumaat prayer, with the movement to the mosque scheduled to begin at 12:30 PM.
As of now, the police have yet to comment on this unfolding situation.
