JUST IN: Trailer Accident Claims 18 Lives at Police Checkpoint in Abia
A devastating accident on the Umuahia-Enugu axis of the Port Harcourt Enugu Highway has left at least 18 travellers dead this Thursday morning.
Reports indicate that the incident occurred at a police checkpoint near the Lokpanta area of Abia State in the early hours of the day.
According to eyewitnesses, an 18-seater commercial bus, waiting for police clearance at the checkpoint, was struck by a trailer whose driver lost control, resulting in the tragic demise of all occupants, including the driver.
Eyewitness Bananas Okereke recounted the harrowing scene, stating that the bodies of the victims were still strewn across the area as of 8:20 am.
In response to the calamity, enraged bus drivers and other motorists have barricaded the road, demanding accountability for the accident. They are calling for the policemen allegedly involved in the incident to be brought back to the scene.
Additionally, colleagues of the deceased bus driver and other concerned citizens have taken to the streets, demanding justice for the victims. They have declared their intent to remain in protest until Governor Alex Otti visits the site.
