JUST IN: Supreme Court Overturns Appeal Court Ruling Recognising Julius Abure as Labour Party Chairman
The Supreme Court has set aside a judgment by the Court of Appeal in Abuja that had recognised Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP). Delivering a unanimous ruling on Friday, a five-member panel of the apex court stated that the Court of Appeal lacked the jurisdiction to make such a pronouncement, especially after determining that the core of the dispute concerned the party’s internal leadership.
The Supreme Court reaffirmed that matters relating to party leadership are internal affairs and therefore outside the purview of judicial intervention. The court ruled in favour of an appeal filed by Senator Ester Nenadi Usman and one other, deeming it meritorious. Consequently, it dismissed a cross-appeal lodged by the Abure-led faction of the Labour Party as unmeritorious.
