JUST IN: Obama Reacts to Shooting Incident at Trump Rally
Following the shocking incident at Donald Trump’s rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, where gunshots were reportedly fired, former President Barack Obama has condemned the violence and called for a return to civility in political discourse.
“There is absolutely no place for political violence in our democracy,” Obama posted on his X handle (formerly Twitter). “Although we don’t yet know exactly what happened, we should all be relieved that former President Trump wasn’t seriously hurt, and use this moment to recommit ourselves to civility and respect in our politics. Michelle and I are wishing him a quick recovery.”
The incident occurred as Trump was speaking and displaying a chart of border crossing numbers. Gunshots were heard, prompting screams from the crowd and causing security to rush in and shield Trump. He was seen reaching for his neck, with what appeared to be blood on his face.
Trump was quickly escorted off the stage by Secret Service agents, while chants of “USA! USA!” echoed through the crowd. The rally was put on hold, and his motorcade left the venue. Trump’s condition was not immediately known, but he did raise his fist in the air as he was escorted off.
The U.S. Secret Service and other law enforcement agencies have not yet provided further details about the incident. President Joe Biden, when asked if he’d been briefed about the situation, responded, “No.”
The shooting has drawn reactions from political figures across the spectrum, with Senator Tim Scott tweeting, “Praying for President Trump and everyone at the rally in Pennsylvania. May God watch over them all.”
