JUST IN: Gunmen Attack Divisional Police Headquarters in Enugu, Kill Officer, Steal Weapons

Gunmen launched a deadly assault on the Awgu Divisional Police Headquarters in Enugu State in the early hours of Monday, March 24, 2025, killing a police constable identified as Akpa Emmanuel. According to eyewitness accounts, the attackers vandalised several facilities within the station and carted away weapons, including an AK-47 rifle and two riot guns.

The attack has heightened tensions in Awgu town, prompting a significant deployment of security forces. The new Commissioner of Police in Enugu, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, swiftly dispatched the Deputy Commissioner of Operations, Special Forces, the Police Mobile Force, the Counter-Terrorism Unit, and other tactical teams to bolster security in the area.

The incident comes shortly after a new Divisional Police Officer was assigned to the station, raising concerns about a possible link between the recent change and the attack.

In a related development, gunmen also targeted the Inyi Divisional Police Headquarters in Oji-River Local Government Area at approximately 2:00 a.m. on the same day. However, that attack was repelled by security agents, and no casualties or damages were reported.

Attempts to reach the Enugu State Police Command for official comments proved unsuccessful, as the Command’s spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe, did not respond to calls or messages.
