JUST IN: EFCC Set to Prosecute Cubana Chief Priest for Naira Abuse, Following Bobrisky’s Conviction
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has taken legal action against Instagram sensation Pascal Okechukwu, popularly known as Cubana Chief Priest, for allegedly mishandling and tampering with Nigerian currency at a social gathering, a violation of the Central Bank Act of 2007.
Scheduled for Wednesday, April 17th, 2024, Cubana Chief Priest will face trial before Justice Kehinde Ogundare of the Federal High Court in Lagos. The charges, consisting of three counts, were filed by EFCC prosecutor Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN) alongside seven other legal representatives of the Commission.
According to the filed charges, Cubana Chief Priest is accused of spraying and tampering with N500 notes during social events, dating back to 2020 and as recent as January and February of 2024. These actions allegedly contravene Section 21(1) of the Central Bank Act 2007, which prohibits the defacing or abuse of Nigerian currency.
This development follows closely on the heels of the EFCC’s recent prosecution of controversial cross-dresser Idris Okuneye, famously known as Bobrisky, who was found guilty on similar charges and sentenced to a six-month jail term.
The EFCC’s crackdown on individuals accused of abusing the national currency underscores its commitment to upholding financial regulations and preserving the integrity of Nigeria’s monetary system.
