JUST IN: Abducted Kuriga Schoolchildren Released After Weeks In Captivity, Says Gov Sani
Scores of schoolchildren who were abducted from Kuriga, Kaduna State, have been released after enduring weeks of captivity, marking a hopeful turn in one of Nigeria’s largest mass kidnappings in recent years.
The students, totaling approximately 287, were forcefully taken from their school premises by armed assailants riding motorcycles, triggering widespread national outrage and condemnation.
Governor Uba Sani confirmed the children’s release, expressing gratitude to President Bola Tinubu, government officials, and security agencies for their concerted efforts in securing the students’ freedom.
“While the school children were in captivity, I spoke with Mr. President several times,” Governor Sani remarked. “He shared our pains, comforted us, and worked tirelessly with us to ensure the safe return of the children.”
The incident, reminiscent of the April 2014 Chibok abduction, underscored the persistent threat of banditry and insecurity facing educational institutions in Nigeria.
President Tinubu and military authorities reiterated their commitment to rescuing the victims without yielding to ransom demands, directing intensified efforts toward their safe recovery.
