Israel’s Military Prepares for ‘Coordinated’ Assault on Gaza from Land, Air, and Sea

In a chilling escalation of the ongoing conflict, the Israeli military announced on Saturday that preparations for an imminent, “integrated and coordinated attack from the air, sea, and land” on the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip were nearly complete.

This looming threat of a ground invasion comes on the heels of relentless rocket attacks by Hamas fighters, who breached Israeli border defenses and wreaked havoc across southern Israeli communities just one week ago, resulting in over 1,300 casualties.

Israel’s retaliatory bombing campaign in the Gaza Strip, launched in response to the attacks, has left more than 2,200 people dead. In a move that has drawn international concern, Israel has sealed off access to this Palestinian enclave on the Mediterranean Sea, blocking the entry of essential supplies such as food, fuel, water, and medicines.

The prospect of a ground assault to eliminate the Hamas militant group in Gaza grew more ominous when Israel instructed approximately one million residents of northern Gaza to evacuate to the southern half of the coastal enclave within 24 hours. Later, Israel extended the deadline until 4 pm (1300 GMT) on Saturday, offering Gazans safe passage via approved routes.

In an attempt to thwart these evacuations, Hamas discouraged civilians from heeding Israel’s call, denouncing it as “propaganda messages.” Witnesses in Gaza reported growing panic as people fled by car, truck, donkey carts, and even on foot along the territory’s sole major road.

Hamas claimed that ongoing Israeli airstrikes targeted those fleeing south, resulting in the deaths of 70 individuals and the injury of 200 more. Shockingly, the majority of victims were children and women, according to an Islamist organization spokesperson.

The situation remains grim, with Hamas reporting that nine additional hostages taken from Israel were allegedly killed in Israeli airstrikes in the past 24 hours. The number of Palestinians killed in Israeli counter-attacks on Gaza now stands at 2,215, with 8,714 people injured, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. Israel maintains that its airstrikes solely target militant sites and accuses Hamas of using Gazans as human shields.

Israel’s repeated calls for Gaza’s evacuation have drawn significant criticism, with the United Nations urging Israel to revoke this order, citing the risk of a “catastrophic situation.” Furthermore, top diplomats from Turkey and Egypt have called on Israel to facilitate the safe passage of humanitarian aid into Gaza, where more than 2 million people are at risk due to a dwindling supply of potable water and a blockade on essential supplies.

In Israel, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made his first visit to the border area near Gaza since the Hamas attack, surveying the homes destroyed in what he referred to as a “terrible massacre.”

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) conducted “localized raids” into Gaza on Friday, seen by many as a precursor to a full-scale ground invasion.

Meanwhile, in northern Israel, the pro-Iranian Lebanese Hezbollah movement launched new attacks on Israeli posts in the disputed Shebaa Farms area along the Lebanese-Israeli border, resulting in civilian casualties. This comes amidst heightened tensions and skirmishes along the border between Israel and Lebanon, raising concerns about further violence in the northern Israeli border region with Lebanon.

On Saturday, Hezbollah reported the death of another fighter, bringing the total to four since October 7th. The situation remains extremely volatile and continues to evolve rapidly.
