Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu Dissolves War Cabinet
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has dissolved the existing war cabinet, responding to pressure from his far-right coalition allies. This decision follows the resignation of Benny Gantz, former defense minister and leader of a more moderate faction, from the emergency government, Al Jazeera reports.
The call for a new war cabinet was primarily driven by Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir. Both are key figures from the nationalist-religious camp in the Israeli government and have advocated for a cabinet comprised of coalition party leaders.
Gantz’s resignation on Sunday, June 9, came amid the ongoing conflict with the Palestinian militant group Hamas. In his resignation, Gantz cited fundamental strategic differences, accusing Netanyahu of hindering a decisive victory in the war on Gaza.
Netanyahu responded to Gantz’s resignation via a post on X (formerly Twitter), emphasizing the critical nature of the current conflict. He stated, “Israel is in an existential war on several fronts. This is not the time to abandon the campaign – this is the time to join forces.” He called for unity and reiterated the commitment to achieving all war objectives, including the release of hostages and the elimination of Hamas.
The Prime Minister also expressed his openness to collaborate with any Zionist party willing to support the nation’s efforts in the ongoing conflict, stating, “My door will remain open to any Zionist party that is ready to get under the stretcher and assist in bringing victory over our enemies and ensuring the safety of our citizens.”
