IPOB Declares May 30 Sit-at-Home to Honor Civil War Heroes in South East Nigeria
The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has announced that Thursday, May 30, will be observed as a sit-at-home day across the South East region of Nigeria to honor those who fought and died in the Nigerian Civil War from 1967 to 1970.
In a statement released by Comrade Emma Powerful, IPOB’s Media and Publicity Secretary, the group called on all Biafrans, friends of Biafra, and residents within Biafra Land to participate in this solemn remembrance. IPOB leader, Mazi Nnamdi OkwuChukwu Kanu, urged everyone to use the day to reflect on the sacrifices made by the fallen heroes and heroines.
“All schools, government offices, private offices, banks, transport unions, market unions, and private individuals are expected to shut down operations on May 30th, except for medical personnel and emergency workers,” the statement read.
The group also urged Christians and traditional worshipers to pray for the fallen heroes and for Biafra’s independence from Nigeria. In addition, IPOB issued a stern warning to residents to avoid loitering and remain indoors from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. to prevent any possible confrontations with security forces.
IPOB encourages its members in the diaspora to organize peaceful rallies and seminars to raise awareness about the Biafran struggle and the alleged ongoing genocide against the Biafran people. By observing the sit-at-home, IPOB hopes to keep alive the memory of those who died in the Biafran struggle and continue their fight for independence.
This announcement comes amidst heightened tensions in the South East and serves as a call to honor the legacy of those who sacrificed for Biafra. As May 30 approaches, residents are urged to comply with the sit-at-home directive for their safety and to pay tribute to the Biafran heroes.
