Chaos at Ile-Epo Market as Hoodlums Set Fire to Shops in Lagos
A violent clash between rival groups in the Ile-Epo area of Lagos State on Thursday resulted in chaos and destruction, leaving numerous people injured and several shops in ruins. The disturbance, which began late Wednesday night, continued into Thursday morning, culminating in an arson attack that ravaged a local market.
Eyewitnesses recounted a scene of utter pandemonium as groups of hoodlums set fire to various sections of the market. “It was complete chaos. Flames were everywhere, and all you could hear were screams and the sound of breaking glass,” said a market vendor, who wished to remain anonymous for safety reasons.
Efforts by the Lagos State Police to contain the situation met significant resistance. A spokesperson for the police department stated that their teams were dispatched quickly, but the aggressive nature of the mob made intervention difficult. The police are currently investigating the cause of the conflict and have committed to restoring order in the area.
Emergency response teams also encountered significant challenges. A fire truck from the Lagos State Fire Service was forced to withdraw after being attacked by a hostile crowd throwing stones. “We attempted to reach the scene to extinguish the flames, but it became too dangerous to continue,” said one of the firefighters on the scene.
Authorities are assessing the full extent of the damage and have promised to step up security in the area to prevent further violence. The market remains closed until further notice as investigations continue and cleanup efforts get underway. Local officials have urged residents to remain calm and report any suspicious activity to the authorities.
