Innocent Man Killed by Stray Police Bullet While Transferring Money to Wife via PoS
Igueomo community on the Benin-Agbor Road witnessed heightened tension as a stray bullet, allegedly fired from a police gun, claimed the life of a man. The incident occurred on Wednesday evening, casting a somber atmosphere over the community.
The victim, identified as a Hausa man, had visited a Point of Sale (POS) operator to transfer N4000 to his wife in the village. Reports indicate that the tragedy unfolded amidst a clash between local hoodlums and the police. The law enforcement officers, attempting to apprehend the unruly individuals, fired shots during the pursuit, inadvertently hitting the innocent man who was seeking refuge.
Sources reveal that after completing the money transfer, the deceased became aware of the unfolding chaos and attempted to escape the danger. Unfortunately, he fell victim to the stray bullet, succumbing to his injuries on the spot.
The news of the tragic incident quickly spread, prompting a spontaneous and impassioned response from the local youths. Armed with sticks and machetes, they rallied in large numbers, blocking the road in protest against the unjust killing. As a result, the thoroughfare was impassable, leading to disruptions in transportation with passengers compelled to disembark and traverse on foot to their destinations.
In response to inquiries, the State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Chidi Nwabuzor, confirmed the incident and assured that investigations were underway to identify those involved in the ill-fated police operation. The community now grapples with grief and anger as they demand justice for the untimely loss of one of their own.
